What is VASSAL:

Imagine sitting across the table with your friend to play a game. You each have your cards, pieces, hand of cards, whatnot.
Now, imagine that the table is a computer screen, and your friend is in another state/country. You still have the "play surface", and cards, pieces, hand of cards and even all the whatnot. It's all just onscreen.

VASSAL does not enforce rules (nothing in the real world forces you to play by the rules either), but you and your friend(s) can move things around, put stuff into your [hand], play/move [pieces] on the [table], and with the addition of Skype, you can even talk real-time with your friend as you're playing the game together.

Based on who made the Module, and how they set it up, the pieces will have different attributes, and even the map will have specs. Like a square grid, or a hex grid, or NO grid, allowing free movement of all pieces. That's a whole different thread though, Module construction. There are a lot of things VASSL can do, depending on the creator, but there are also some things that can't be done.

That's VASSAL in a nutshell.

Where do I get the X-Wing game??

At the top of the VASSAL webpage, there's a link to the Modules
Image

Image

Then use this Alphabetical Skip to go to the "S" modules
Image
There it is! Click the link & go here v
Image

Download the latest Module and all the extensions,
Download Ver 3.0

Put them all together in a folder called X-Wing miniatures (or whatever you want, I just recommend putting the module and all it's extensions into the same folder for organizational purposes. -to each his own though)

HOW do I get this set up to PLAY already!?!?!?

Open VASSAL
Image
This is the Module Library window. It will hold any modules you play in a list for easy access. Once you load this (and any other modules you discover), it'll stay in your library for ease and speed of game start up.
Image
Open Module, Find X-Wing.vmod wherever you saved it.
Image

VASSAL will start the game up, at this point, you can just Cancel the load, and close the game. We're going to add the extensions first.

Image
Right-click on the X-Wing module and choose Add Extension.
Browse to the place you stored your files and choose one to add (we'll start with the 3'x3' map).
Image
VASSAL will create a folder with the Module name_ext to hold all your extensions and will move the extensions into that folder.
Image
(NOTE: In the past, I had a friend who did not have Administrator Access to his computer, and he was unable to load extensions because Windows would not allow VASSAL to create the extensions folder. If you run into this problem, you can either just create the folder yourself as seen above, or right-click the VASSAL icon and choose "Run as Administrator")
Image
Note the little blue key to the left of the Module name now? this indicates sub-files (loaded extensions)
Click the blue key to see what's loaded.
Image

continue to Add the rest of the extensions as above, and your Library window should look like this:

Now you're ready to fire it up and play the game with all extensions loaded, all X-Wing Booster packs available.

Apparently only 2 people have actually played the module, or at least shown interest in the Y-Wing & Tie Advanced...
So, as you are now the 3rd person to report the Move Dial bug with these 2 ships, I'll assume it's bugged for everybody and remove the Ver. 2.0 extensions from VASSAL.
Everybody delete the 2.0 extensions and update to 2.1!!

(Included for archival purposes, forget 2. anything, Get 3.0! and watch for 4.0)

There's some movies up in the VASSAL Resources forum.
Back up a level to "I hate reeeadiiing.. can't you just make a movie of how all this works?"
They take you through Download, installing Extensions, and basic Hand setup.

But it is required to read the title in a whiny voice...

Make sure you're grabbing the move dial from the Rebel or Imperial piece area.
There's "Dumb AI" Dials that I included in this module for solo play, and those will hide the move from you.
See "Flying Solo" thread under General Discussions for more information on "Dumb AI"

Movement =>
Chits =>
Rebel =>
| Pilots | Ships | Dials | Range Ruler |
= X-Wing Dial
= Y-Wing Dial
Imperial=>
| Pilots | Ships | Dials | Range Ruler |
= Tie Fighter Dial
= Tie Advanced Dial
Upgrades =>
Missions =>
Dumb AI=>
| Dumb AI |
= Tie Fighter AI Dial
= X-Wing AI Dial
= Tie Advanced AI Dial
= Y-Wing AI Dial

Be sure you grab your Dial from the right bin.
All Dumb AI Dials will hide the move from everybody.
If you Right-Click on the Dial and there is an option for Randomize CTRL SLASH, then You've grabbed a Dumb AI Dial.

I got it all up and running and am able to do a game. But is there a way to save squads for use in other games? and How do you work with the blank damage cards.

The probability of a successful dice roll is inversely proportional to the relative amount of negative impact its failure will have on your character.

You need the damage cards physically in front of you, and you refer to the text on them. Aiden had to blank them so he wouldn't get the module C&D'd by FFG.

There was a question about how to Save and Load a squad (deck) in the Player hand. So here's a video explaining the process.
